“THE STAMPALIA QUERINI : A GENUINE VENETIAN REPUBLICAN FAMILY” – MARCO ZANETTO

Tuesday 18 November 2014 HISTORY OF VENICE 5.00 pm – admission free

The Querini, one of whose pre-Venetian branches would come to be called the Stampalia – the name of an Aegean island in their possession – represent a genuinely anomalous variation on the lagoon’s typical magnate family. They participated, fearlessly but without reward, in a number of revolts during the Early Middle Ages, which would see them banished to the aforementioned island. However, they would succeed in dragging themselves back up, politically speaking, with a de facto pardon and certain individuals reaching the rank of Procurator of San Marco and ambassador. They would also give rise to a unique culture, a singular mix of Venetian and “Greek” (which is to say, Byzantine) elements as the Venetians were wont to say.
