“THE GRIMANI, GIANTS OF THE VENETIAN RENAISSANCE IN THE CONTEXT OF EUROPE’S GREAT ECCLESIASTICAL FAMILIES” – MARCO ZANETTO

Tuesday 20 January 2015 HISTORY OF VENICE 5.00 pm – admission free

The Grimani family, or its Santa Maria Formosa branch at least, are truly paradigmatic of how such a group could rocket to the higher ranks of the clergy in the course of the sixteenth century and, at the same time, cultivate an exceptional and informed appreciation for the arts, an interest that would lead them to be considered, in some sense at least, among the founding figures of modern, scientific artistic archaeology. Their exceptional progress, however, was not destined to last, and petered out after a few decades, at least in terms of its most interesting outcomes.
